Testing Modified Gravity with Motion of Satellites around Galaxies

چکیده
A modified gravity (MOG) theory, that has been successfully fitted to galaxy rotational velocity data, cluster data, the Bullet Cluster 1E0657-56 and cosmological observations, is fitted to the motion of satellite galaxies around host galaxies at distances 50-400 kpc providing a new sensitive test for MOG. We show that observational data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are consistent with MOG. Subject headings: cosmology: theory — dark matter — galaxies: halos — galaxies: structure

Testing gravity with motion of satellites around galaxies: Newtonian gravity against Modified Newtonian Dynamics
The motion of satellite galaxies around normal galaxies at distances 50-500 kpc provides a sensitive test for the theories. We study the surface density and the velocities of satellites around isolated red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the surface number-density of satellites declines with the projected distance as a power law with the slope −1.5− 2. The rms velocities ...
متن کاملThe Density-Driven Nanofluid Convection in an Anisotropic Porous Medium Layer with Rotation and Variable Gravity Field: A Numerical Investigation
In this study, a numerical examination of the significance of rotation and changeable gravitational field on the start of nanofluid convective movement in an anisotropic porous medium layer is shown. A model that accounts for the impact of Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis is used for nanofluid, while Darcy’s law is taken for the porous medium. The porous layer is subjected to uniform rotat...
متن کاملThe gravity of the situation
In this thesis we examine several ways in which we can explore the early universe through gravitationalwaves and the fundamental nature of gravity through cosmology and observations of dynamics within the solar system. Both of these topics have taken center stage, as we are living at a unique time which promises to bring fundamental insights into the nature of gravity with the discovery of new ...
متن کاملOrbital Evolution of a Particle Interacting with a Single Planet in a Protoplanetary Disk
We investigate the motion of a particle around a low mass planet embedded in a non-turbulent gaseous disk. We take into account the effect of the gas structure that is modified by the gravitational interaction between the planet. We derive an analytic formula that describes the change of the semi-major axis of the particle due to the encounter with the planet using local approximation in distan...
متن کاملMotion Properties of Satellites around External Spiral Galaxies
We are analyzing a sample of closeby galaxy systems, each comprising a bright isolated spiral and its satellites. We find an excess (56%) of prograde satellites over retrograde, which basically holds for all angular displacements from the primary major axis. Monte Carlo simulations show that interlopers and mixing systems at different distances in the sample should not affect porcentages sensibly.
